Tips For The Traveling Executive: Taking Care of Women Travelers

A little more than a year ago, we took a short look at how women and men travel differently for business. Women tend to book more in advance, for example, which can save companies money, but they also stress more about packing what they need, which can be a target area for companies to provide assurances or assistance. One sex isn’t necessarily more effective or efficient than the other, all things considered, so of course it behooves any company sending its team on the road to consider the strengths and challenges of each: leveraging strengths and mitigating challenges.

With this in mind, a variety of services and products is available nowadays, targeting the specific needs and preferences of women business travelers. For most men, traditional business attire often provides a professional look with enough functionality for travel, including hidden pockets for those travel must-haves. But every day, more business travel clothing for women appears on reatilers’ websites, with interior, zippered pockets, professional styling, and materials that don’t take up much space in a suitcase.

Safety is an important concern for any traveler, but women often share that they think more about it than men when on the road. It may be a sad commentary on our societies, but anything that causes your team members undue stress is worth addressing, especially since they’re representing you on the road and working on your behalf. Since men’s preferences have defined standards for so long, men-specific needs don’t seem to be as much of a concern. Some hotels are now offering rooms especially for solo women travelers, including room service delivered only by women, and amenities that make women feel more comfortable. It’s tough to tell whether services like this fill a need or create demand in a savvy marketing way, but what you care about is whether it makes you and your team feel safer.

Increasingly, websites are providing more information aimed directly at women business travelers, with lists called “Ten Great Tips for Women Business Travelers” or similar. Whether you’re a woman who takes a lot of business trips or you’re a man who makes the arrangements for a woman, these lists are worth a look, if for no reason other than the reminder that we travel differently. There’s at least one website dedicated to providing info for women business travelers, including safety tips, informational videos, news, and networking opportunities for sharing experiences with other travelers.

Good management is about knowing the strengths, obstacles, and needs of individual team members as well as guiding people collectively. When you go on the road, your time, energy, and expertise is an investment toward achieving some positive outcome. When you send someone from your team on the road, the investment is in them. Are you treating your men and women travelers exactly the same, leaving it up to them to figure out how to make their trip most fruitful for them? Or do you strive to alleviate worries, amplify abilities, and make it a beneficial trip for all parties, men and women alike?
