Tips For The Traveling Executive: Packing Extra Juice With Portable Device Chargers

You Need Power
You probably already have a charger for your mobile devices, but if you’re on the road a lot, there’s no harm in having another, especially if the extra juice is more travel-friendly, and travel-friendly usually boils down to size. Here, you have several decisions to make about what you need. Compactness and lightness are huge advantages, and chargers come in shapes and sizes comparable to small decks of cards, rolls of breath mints, and very thin credit cards. With a few other preset priorities in mind, you can shop smartly for the charger that will work best for you on your next trip.

Charge and Charge Again
Capacity is another, perhaps greater concern. The capacity of portable chargers is measured in milliamp hours (mAh), and it’s difficult to translate this info into the number of times it will charge your devices because there are so many variables, including the type of device you’re using, how you use it, and whether or not you use it while it’s plugged into the charger. All you really need to know is that more mAh equals more charges for your device, so get the most muscular device you can while staying in your budget and size restrictions.

It may be helpful also to know the input and output power, which is provided in amps (A). Higher input amperage means faster charging of the charger. Higher output amperage means faster charging of your devices. However, it’s not quite as simple as that. Your outlet adapter also has an output measurement, as do the USB ports on your laptop. Paying more for faster charging is meaningless if whatever you’re plugging your charger into cannot maximize that power. The outlet adapter almost always has its output amperage printed on it in tiny letters. The USB ports can be more complicated, because each USB port on your computer is not like every other USB port on that same computer. However, if you want to get deeply into these differences for getting the best charge out of your machine, there is some reliable info and advice on the web.

Can We All Get Along?
You’ll want to maximize compatibility with your devices, so consider your travel arsenal and the cords they require, and find something that most easily lets you plug in, with the fewest cables possible. Multiple ports for simultaneous device charging can be a huge plus. If you’re not traveling with a laptop, keep in mind that you’ll also need a power outlet adapter so you can charge your charger. Some portable chargers come with outlet prongs built in, but most of them add considerable bulk. You may be better off with a small outlet adapter to keep in your suitcase, since you probably won’t need it as you’re out and about.

The Crowded Aisles
There is a lot of product out there in this space, so it’s easy to become overwhelmed with all your choices. You can simplify the process by deciding ahead of time how you prioritize size, capacity, and compatibility, and then decide how much you’d like to spend. Adding the term “travel” to your “portable chargers” search can bring up reviews specifically addressing a traveler’s needs. Browse a few of them, and you’ll also find a few brand names that pop up repeatedly. Although there are nearly countless brands out there, those few have established solid reputations and might be the best place to start.

Plan Ahead
Most portable chargers come pre-charged, but you may want to make sure you have enough time for a full charge before you head out the door, just in case. The greater your charger’s capacity, the longer it will take to charge—the hours while you sleep are usually enough—so plan for that. Keep in mind also that there are regulations in many countries about shipping batteries, and these restrictions may affect how quickly you receive your purchase or whether retailers will ship to you at all. If you’re living in the continental U.S. and order a charger from elsewhere on the continent, you’re probably safe, but again: plan for complications. The hours leading up to your trip are not the time to deal with such difficulties.

If you don’t already know the blessed convenience of packing mobile backup juice for your devices, you’re in for some pleasant lifestyle changes when you get your first portable charger. If you’re already on board, you have a good sense of your current charger’s pluses and minuses. Armed with this info, you should be able to find something that best suits your travel needs in this era where knowing you have enough power is as critical as knowing where the nearest restroom is. Roll up your sleeves, do a little bit of research, and find the ideal travel companion for your smartphone and tablet.
