Tips For The Traveling Executive: Most Popular Business Travel Destinations and Hotel Amenities

When you're planning for a business trip, what are your top concerns? When you hear of upcoming conferences in distant parts of the country, which cities get you excited and which have you hoping for airport-closing blizzards? Here are three surveys published this year, ranking popular destination cities, convention cities, and hotel amenities based on polls and sales. Where do your preferences line up with the rest of the nation's?

Business travel makes up a considerable portion of the travel industry's clientele: According to a report by American Express, worldwide business trips are expected to reach 480.5 million for 2016. The same report lists the most flown-to cities for business travel, based on actual booking through its services. The top five American destinations are Chicago, San Francisco, New York, Philadelphia, and Phoenix. The top five international destinations are London, Toronto, Mexico City, Cancun, and Shanghai.

While those rankings are based on travel bookings, a USA Today poll collected votes from its readership, revealing the popular convention cities. Indianapolis was cited for affordability and connection to the most downtown hotel rooms, landing it in the top spot. Boston, Nashville, Salt Lake City, and Atlanta rounded out the top five for reasons as varied as convenient transportation, new facilities, scenery, nearby attractions, and regional cuisine.

Hotels.com surveyed its customers about hotel amenities, breaking results down between American and international travelers, and between leisure and business travelers. Business travelers ranked free WiFi, by a landslide, as the most-desired amenity, with 49% of respondents putting it at the top of their lists. Free breakfast was cited second-most, 34% behind WiFi, with proximity to mass transit, transportation, and shops coming in third. A comfortable office chair and desk came in fourth. Of perhaps passing interest in the same survey are the least-used amenities: mini bar, bathroom phone, trouser press, shower cap, and DVD player.
