Tips For The Traveling Executive: A Few Alternatives For The Business Traveler

We have discussed alternatives for business travel in the past: driving instead of flying, and Airbnb instead of hotels. In the years since, other choices have presented themselves, which is one of the interesting facets of business travel. There’s always some creative type working on an angle into the lucrative and specialized market. We took a look at some of these new concepts plus a few we may have overlooked, and present the more interesting ones here.

Upside is a booking service that’s advertised heavily on podcasts. If you listen to a podcast in almost any genre, and if that podcast sells commercial time, you’ve almost certainly heard about it. Upside’s gimmick is to incentivize lower costs for travelers booking their own trip, saving their companies money and rewarding them with gift cards. The traveler enters the relevant info, and the website offers a list of options with different prices. The more you save your company, the bigger your gift card reward.

Another new booking service, Rocketrip, considers an employer’s travel policies, then gives the traveler several quotes on less expensive options. When the traveler books cheaper rooms, cars, and flights, the traveler receives a cash reward equaling half the perceived savings. So if company policy allows for what would be $4,000 trip, but the employee books a trip for $3,000, the company and employee split the $1,000 savings, with the traveler receiving a cash bonus of $500.

If savings aren’t necessarily what you’re after, consider radically different types of accommodations for each trip. Yes, we know routine is the business traveler’s best friend, but sometimes routine turns into a rut, and with Airbnb reaching out aggressively to business travelers, out-of-the-ordinary options with the expected business travel amenities are plentiful. A country bed-and-breakfast, a beach house, or a forest cabin with wifi and 24-hour check-in could be yours for not much hassle. You might have to rent a car rather than rely on cabs or Lyfts, but the unusual lodging might not add as much to the commute as you’d think. Keep in mind also that Airbnb, while very convenient, isn’t your only option. The old-school direct bookings for vacation houses or getaways are still out there too.

Consider also that flying, while the fastest and often most convenient mode of travel, is not your only option. There are people who swear by the reliability and comfort of traveling by train. Many train routes don’t save your company much money, and of course a train takes more time, but flying is almost always stressful in some way, while traveling by train, once the trip has begun, feels less like being held captive for five hours. If you plan to work while enroute, keep in mind that train wifi is famously terrible, so plan ahead and download your important files or movies for offline work.

Road warriors pride themselves in knowing inside and out the rigors and routines of business trips, but sometimes that expertise becomes boring. Of course your focus is on the work ahead of you, but why not change the game up once in a while with less expensive itineraries, scenic routes, and creative accommodations? Even the least exciting destinations have hidden treasure somewhere, and life’s too full of interesting options to limit yourself to the same thing, over and over!
