How To Balance Your Executive Career & Your Personal Life

Many executives believe that to achieve success in today’s competitive and fast-paced world, they must sacrifice their personal lives and the dream of ever maintaining a work-life balance. This does not necessarily have to be true. How do you join the ranks of executives who cultivate a healthy work-life balance? Start with these three tips.

Establish new habits. For example, do you have a reputation for answering every email within minutes, regardless of time of day? Do you maintain an email response rate of five to ten minutes even on evenings, weekends, and holidays? Has your blackberry become an extension of your arm? Once you condition people to expect an instant response rate and continue to reinforce it with every email you send, it’s difficult to break the pattern. You must instead develop new patterns that will satisfy the demands of both your professional and personal lives.

Analyze how you spend your out-of-office time and determine where you can reclaim personal space and create downtime for you to enjoy yourself away from your job and its responsibilities. Start by asking yourself questions like: Do you find yourself working at home, even after you have left the office for the day? Do you work on non-essential projects that you could otherwise delegate to your staff? Do you find yourself tackling work items at home, regardless of timeline or importance?

Set aside specific times to read and respond to emails. Once your time is up, move on to other projects. Without a schedule in place it’s easy to lose entire days simply to checking email and lose focus on your other responsibilities and the day-to-day management of staff, which can force you to burn the midnight oil to compensate.
