Executive Strategies: How To Groom The Ideal Right-Hand Man Or Woman

A right-hand man or woman can be a valuable asset to an Executive Leader in any organization. Whether this person functions as a second-in-command or more of a personal assistant to the executive manager, this employee can benefit a company by allowing management to delegate responsibilities. This person can also act as a go-between for management and other employees, as well as a manager in her own right depending on how management uses her.

Choose someone who knows or is interested in knowing more than his position. A right-hand employee working as a second-in-command must know about the day-to-day management decisions that keep an organization running in order to be effective. By being aware of all the different facets of the company, the right-hand employee can identify issues that need to be handled directly by the Executive Leader.

Select someone you and your other employees trust and respect. If managed well, a right-hand employee can keep an organization running smoothly and relieve you of non-critical decision-making responsibilities. Employees may feel more comfortable bringing issues and suggestions to a fellow employee, thereby creating an effective line of communication in a company. Encouraging these professional relationships will lead to a more cohesive business.

Identify the area or areas in which you would like to see the most growth and improvement for your organization in the long term. Depending on your organization this may range from customer service and brand management to innovation and employee relations. By keeping company objectives in mind, you can choose someone who has strengths in those areas. You can then build upon those strengths as well as build confidence in your right-hand employee.

Set a clear and consistent precedent for making decisions. If your right-hand employee functions as a second-in-command, you will want their decisions to mirror yours, or at least be in line with your vision for your organization. A consistent process for making decisions will also enable your right-hand employee to communicate those decisions to other employees in an efficient manner.

Keep your right-hand employee informed about changes in the company, especially changes to short-term goals. A business is a dynamic organization, and just as decisions should be clear so should the changes that inevitably come up. With the help of a right-hand employee, an Executive Leader can adjust to or implement changes. Making sure you are both on the same page is vital to moving forward in a company.

For an executive manager, director, Vice President, or CEO, a right-hand employee can be a vital key to the success of a business. It is a flexible position that can be adjusted to suit each manager and organization. Finding the right person who can handle the responsibility will benefit not only Executive Leaders but the entire company as well.
