Executive Leadership Techniques To Motivate Your Team

As an executive, you will often be responsible for managing teams of people and directing them in their projects. Sometimes you will oversee employees who are hard workers, take initiative, and always strive to do their best; other times, you will be placed in charge of those who need additional guidance or development to reach their potential. However, regardless of employee types or capabilities, successful executives soon learn that effective management involves providing employees with the appropriate motivation to help them excel and understand their raison d’être within the firm. How can you motivate your team? Start with these three tips.

Facilitate Teamwork & a Positive Work Environment:
As an executive, you should have a firm grasp of each of your employee’s skill sets and personalities. Utilize them to form teams that reflect diversity in experience, competencies, and ideas. Communicate expectations and goals clearly. By facilitating teamwork, you will cultivate a positive work environment comprised of employees who are aware of each other’s proficiencies and who have learned to rely upon their coworkers to accomplish objectives.

Mentor & Coach:
Provide feedback when an employee has executed a task satisfactorily or poorly, and remember to be specific and professional with your comments. Do not make personal attacks on their character or personality; rather, stay focused on their work performance and rely on facts to communicate your point. Also, give the employee the opportunity to respond and actively solicit his opinion on how to best address an issue.

Recognize Accomplishments:
Recognizing an employee’s accomplishments is a clear motivator in the workplace. Reinforcing excellence contributes to the satisfaction an employee feels in a job well done, as well as ensures that it will continue. Recognition can include an informal verbal commendation, a gift card, or a written note, among other tokens of recognition.
