Executive Leadership Techniques: How To Change Your Management Style
Change is an ironic constant in business, as in any part of life. As an Executive Manager, you must be able to adapt
to change and actively implement changes to improve your organization. One sometimes difficult but often necessary change
you can make is your management style. Here are some suggestions about when and how to make adjustments to your leadership.
Identify your management style. Do you make all of your company's decisions with no input from others? Do you have management
teams or do all of your employees have equal input in company decisions? Once you identify how you make decisions as
an Executive Leader, you can decide which parts need adjustment. This may be one of the most difficult aspects of changing
your management style because it means admitting that you are doing something that isn't working and needs improvement.
Solicit feedback about your management style from other managers or even your own employees. Use the information to assess
yourself as a leader and begin making adjustments from there.
Identify the issues you want to address. Making adjustments to your management style can really help you and your organization,
but you need to focus your efforts so that they will have the maximum impact. Are you changing to energize your organization
or is this shift in response to a problem? Is the problem internal or external? Is this long-term or short-term? Once
you are clear about which area or areas you want to address, you can adjust your style accordingly.
Communicate with your employees. Changing your style may mean changes for your workers. Make sure they understand how
changes in your leadership will affect them and what their responsibilities are, especially if some employees will be
in decision-making positions. You don't have to go into all the details that led to the changes, but your workers need
to be kept aware of what is going on in the organization. Changing your leadership style may not always go smoothly (changes
often don't), so keep in touch with your employees to see how effective your new direction really is.
Don't change everything at once, and be flexible. Change can often have bumps along the way, so implementing a huge
shift in leadership style may throw off your organization at least for a while. The more you change, the longer it may
take your business to adjust. Also as you refine your management style, new issues—both positive and challenging—will
come up. Tackling those issues may lead to more changes in your leadership style. Be ready and flexible to keep your
organization running and improving.
As Executive Leader, you have the decision-making ability to move and shape your business. By changing your leadership
style, you can address problems and open up opportunities for your organization.
