Executive Leaders: Maintaining Your Company’s Social Media Presence

With today's technology, Executive Leaders have a wide variety of ways to promote their businesses. While social media may open opportunities for a company, use of this technology may backfire if not used appropriately. Here are some tips for managing social media for businesses:

Take the time to understand how each medium works. Social media platforms are businesses themselves, and each one is striving to be unique. Just as a carpenter needs to know which end of the hammer to hold, Executive Managers must understand how their social media tools work. Taking the time to explore the particulars of each medium can help to maximize their usage.

Create a company policy for social media. If you are not personally maintaining your company's social media, it is very important that the person chosen to do so has clear guidelines for the content on your accounts. Be clear about who has access to the organization's social media and what kind of information is appropriate for the internet.

Be consistent with information across media. Maintaining a presence on the internet often involves more than one form of social media. You can tailor your content to the uniqueness of each platform but make sure the essential information on one platform does not contradict another.

Keep your information personalized, fresh, and up-to-date. Make it worth it for your subscribers to stay in touch. Using a personal touch on your social media sites goes a long way to maintaining a good impression of your organization. As much as possible avoid communication that sounds like an automated message, junk mail, or form letter. Also, be sure your clients and customers know the information on your social media sites is current. Sites that obviously have not been updated for even a few months can be a turn off for customers. If you choose to use social media, use it.

Use the interactivity of social media, but stay professional. Interacting with customers is a great way to make them feel good about your business. You can use your social media sites to solicit input from your customers, but be prepared for negative feedback. Your public response to customers can be just as valuable as any advertising or promotion. Address any concerns or complaints promptly, professionally, and personally.

If you make a mistake, own up to it, apologize, and move on. No business is perfect, and the unfortunate downside to social media is that mistakes are there for the whole internet to see. Just as in offline life, trying to cover up a mistake often makes one look worse than taking responsibility for it. Again, address any mistakes you or your organization makes promptly, professionally, and personally.

Social media is becoming an absolute necessity for today's business world. Maintaining an organization's social media presence is an important responsibility for Executive Managers. Through social media, Executive Leaders can bring their companies to a greater audience and therefore expand their opportunities for growth.
