Executive Leaders: Learn How To Foster Creativity In The Workforce

As the CEO, Vice President, Director, or Manager of your company, you are responsible for furthering your organization’s potential as well as devising new ways to boost your competitiveness and success. One way to accomplish this is by investing in your employees and both challenging and inspiring them to tap into their own abilities and interests to strengthen the company’s pool of resources, talents, and skillsets. After all, a company is only as strong as its employees and wise Executive Leaders know how to equip their workforce with the tools they need to drive the company to the top.

Here are 3 useful strategies that Directors and Managers like you have used to foster creativity in the workplace:

  • Assess Interests: If given the chance, employees who are permitted to pursue their own interests will excel faster than those who are simply going through the motions and biding their time until the end of the workday. Experienced Executive Leaders observe their employees’ passions and interests and determine which could potentially benefit the company. For example, if you discover that an employee is an avid Toastmasters member, recruit her to offer suggestions for your sales or management team’s company pitch. Likewise, if you learn that an employee builds websites in his free time, ask for his opinion on how to improve your company’s website. By seeking existing interests and respectfully asking for your employee’s assistance, you are both bettering your organization and offering your employee the chance to shine doing what he or she enjoys.
  • Harness Creativity & Be Open to New Ideas: Some employees are hesitant to present new and sometimes radical ideas to management, even when it comes to minor suggestions like rephrasing a sentence on the company brochure or rearranging the paper in the office supplies cabinet to maximize space. Not all ideas will be viable, but smart Executive Leaders will take the time to encourage their staff to propose ways to make the company more efficient and effective. Find what works for you, whether it’s issuing an open call to employees or scheduling one hour in the week where your door will be open to any and all new ideas. Some Executive Leaders even attach incentives to reward ideas that save the company time or money, or boost sales.
  • Invest in Your Employees through Training: Sometimes all that prevents employees from reaching a new level of creativity and skill is knowledge. For example, if an employee demonstrates a clear talent for design and a sharp eye for arranging photos and text into company flyers via Microsoft Word or Powerpoint, your company might pay for him to take classes on the Adobe Creative Suite and graphic design. By providing him with the tools to become a more professional designer, you are enhancing your company’s marketing skills and therefore potentially impacting your sales and customer reach. Classes will also bolster your employee’s skillset and, if graphic design is one of his interests, he will work even harder to improve his abilities and be appreciative of the chance to take his design skills to the next level.
