Executive Leaders: Increase The Productivity & Happiness of Employees Through Professional Development

A skilled and satisfied professional staff is invaluable to a business. Executive Managers are responsible for furthering the development of their staff for both the benefit of their organizations as well as their employees. Here are some tips, benefits, and options for the professional development of your staff.

Budget both time and money for employee development. While professional development can be a great motivator, asking employees to use their free time for it is counter-productive. Do not ask employees to attend development sessions on their own time without compensation. Improving staff skills is for the benefit of the company, so it is worth it to use company time and resources to facilitate employee development.

Discuss your employees' professional goals. As an Executive Leader, it is your responsibility to ensure both the growth of your company as well as the growth of your staff. Work with each employee and their supervisors to combine their professional aspirations with your organization's goals. You may have a future manager, analyst, or technical innovator who just needs some training to get on the right course. Helping your employees with their career goals is a great motivator that will ultimately benefit your organization as a whole.

Look everywhere for development opportunities. Local business schools and professional organizations often offer classes and workshops, especially in the areas of business management. Invite your contacts in your professional field to give lectures or seminars. Keep abreast of conferences and conventions in and related to your field. This is often where the newest trends and ideas in your field will be showcased, and where new contacts can be made and opportunities found. It may be worth the time and money to send your employees to national and even international gatherings. The skills and knowledge they will bring back can be invaluable to your organization. Work with the employees attending these events so they can teach and mentor other staff members.

Don't forget the internet. The internet provides many opportunities for distance learning, often through business schools or professional organizations in various fields. Colleges and universities now offer distance learning certificates and degrees. Professional websites offer webinars in a wide variety of subjects ranging from business management to blog design. Search the internet for appropriate training for your employees.

Make employee development part of the workplace schedule and follow up with your staff. Whether you invite professionals in your company's field for training sessions, send your employees out for seminars, or utilize webinars, make it an integral part of your business. Organize formal training inside and outside the workplace, and solicit feedback from your staff on how they are using what they learned. Keep an open dialogue with your employees to keep track of their development.

The growth and development of a company begins with its employees. Workers who are satisfied with their professional development will be more motivated in the workplace, thus raising the production level of the whole organization. Executive Leaders who can improve their workers' skills and motivate their staff are on the right track to building a successful organization.
