Executive Business Travel: Top 3 Tips To Cope With Constant Traveling
While many Executive Leaders thrive upon business travel, others view it as a vital, albeit less desirable responsibility
that comes with their position. For those of you who loathe it or, in some cases, only barely tolerate it, here are 3
tips to help the task become more bearable:
- Tip 1: Upgrade. Anyone who has ever traveled in Economy Class on airplanes knows the particular strain of spending
lengthy flights in cramped quarters with poor meals (and now, more commonly, no meals at all). Executive Leaders who
must fly across the country or, even worse, around the world multiple times a month, typically earn enough miles or
points to upgrade to Business or First Class. Whether you must use points or your company offers to do this for you,
upgrading can make all the difference and ensure you land at your destination as refreshed as possible to step into
your first meeting.
- Tip 2: Maximize Travel Time. For those Executive Leaders who are expected to travel in addition to managing a heavy
workload, the task of plowing through projects can seem daunting when you spend most of your time in the air, in meetings,
and at events. To avoid spending late nights working in your hotel room after a full day of meetings, tackle as many
projects as you can while you travel to and from your destination. Since you are required to be on an airplane for
lengthy amounts of time, spending it lessening your workload not only clears up your schedule in the long run so you
can squeeze in some rest, sightseeing, or other personal activities, but it also makes the time pass faster.
- Tip 3: Take Your Peace with You. Executive Leaders who spend a good deal of time on the road or in the air bring
with them an item or two that makes them feel at home, no matter where their travels take them. It doesn’t have to
be large or expensive, and it doesn’t always have to be the same thing. Deciding which item is a personal choice, but
many Executive Leaders bring with them a framed family photo to put on the nightstand. Others bring along a well-loved
book or something that smells like home. Regardless of your selection, your special item should be something that can
be put up quickly and just as swiftly removed, and its presence should bring you peace and a sense of familiarity wherever
in the world you go.
Although traveling may be a requirement of your Executive role, there are other ways to make it seem less like a draining,
never-ending trip outside of your comfort zone and away from your family. Whether business travel is a minor annoyance
or a dreaded activity, you must find your own coping mechanisms in order to continue to perform well on your company’s
behalf and to keep yourself emotionally and physically healthy throughout each trip.
