Corporate Responsibility: B-Corps State by State
As of the end of 2015, the number of certified B-Corporations in the United States is just over 800, representing slightly more than half of all B-Corporations in the world. As these numbers grow, general awareness of the B-Corp movement also grows, and the hope is that this trend continues for the foreseeable future. Toward this increased awareness, we took a look at a breakdown of the number of certified B-Corporations in each of the United States.
It’s probably no surprise that California tops the list with 227, more than double New York’s 103, and almost quadruple third-ranked Colorado’s 62. California’s enormous population surely plays a part in its numbers, but its reputation, whether an earned or overstated stereotype, seems to be echoed in the number and variety of corporations committing to more than a healthy bottom line. Colorado and Oregon, ranked third and fourth in B-Corporations, are 22nd and 27th in population (according to 2014 estimates based on 2010 U.S. Census figures), while 23 states have three B-Corps or fewer, totaling 22 B-Corps among them, or one fewer than either Illinois or Vermont, who are tied for ninth. Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Utah, and West Virginia each have zero B-Corps.
There are always state-level regulatory and market factors that can directly influence the ability of companies to meet the criteria for B-Corp certification, and state-by-state differences in personality cannot be discounted. Interestingly, of states with zero B-Corps, four (Arkansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and West Virginia) have already passed legislation protecting B-Corporations, while three more (Kentucky, North Dakota, and Utah) have bills either pending or in the works.
Among the 800 B-Corps are some familiar names of general, national prominence, including Ben & Jerry’s (ice cream), Kickstarter (crowdfunding), Fetzer (wines), and Dr. Bronner (soaps). Most often, however, B-Corps are local companies, providing branding consultancy, web development, yogurt, hammocks, and more than a hundred other industries. Twenty-six of the Inc. 5000 fastest-growing privately-held companies in America are certified B-Corps, underscoring the tenet that being a B-Corp is not about charity, but about a different way of viewing profit that doesn’t exclude monetary gain as one consideration. B-Corps are proving to be financially viable as well as community conscious, a truth that will hopefully see these numbers grow in the coming year.
