Book Review: Thrive: The Third Metric To Redefining Success and Creating A Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder by Arianna Huffington

Arianna Huffington’s The Huffington Post started as a news aggregation website, but quickly established itself as a source of political information and comment, winning a Pulitzer Prize in 2012—the first digital media enterprise to do so. As it became a force in the media, Huffington says, she collapsed from exhaustion one day, resulting in facial injuries and multiple medical tests, to make sure exhaustion was the sole explanation.

In Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder (Harmony Books, 2014), Huffington explains how, in the midst of these medical tests, she was confronted with the question about whether this is what her hard work added up to: repeated visits to the doctor certainly didn’t feel like the success all her sleep deprivation promised.

Anyone who’s been paying attention to Huffington in the past few years knows where this leads. Given any audience at all, she takes the moment to expound on her concept of the Third Metric, which is based upon the reasoning that money and power, the traditional measures of professional success, are inadequate in defining what we truly think success should be.

An elegant speaker and writer, Huffington’s only failure in communicating her concept is not coming up with a parallel name for the Third Metric—that’s in fact the name it goes by—although she does take plenty of time to explain the four components that make up the Third Metric: well-being, wisdom, wonder, and giving. It’s difficult to make a case against her thesis. As we strive for a better quality of life, we’re aware that money and power are only as good as what they contribute to those four pillars. Do they enable us to seek wisdom, to experience wonder, to give to others, and to nurture our well-being?

Huffington insists that they must. If we’re not convinced, she offers an impassioned preponderance of evidence from the realms of sociology, medicine, and psychology (among others) in very specific ways. We must get adequate sleep. We must use our blessings to bless others. We must constantly be works in progress, striving to be better and better versions of us. Not quite aspiring to be a self-help manifesto, it strives instead to lay the foundation for the mindset that seeks self-help.

“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards,” Huffington writes. “So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something—your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.” It is clear that the nasty gash she opened above her eye in that exhausted collapse opened up a lot more for Arianna Huffington: she has at least two new missions in life: one for her own life and one to inspire our lives.
